John Newton: Author of "Amazing Grace"

By Brian Blandford

John Newton, son of a naval captain and a God-fearing mother, denied his faith and became a very wicked man. As the captain of a slave vessel, he not only captured and enslaved Africans, he fulfilled his unbridled lusts on his innocent cargo. After his conversion to Christ he was a well-known pastor, poet, and a strong voice against the slave trade. He is best remembered for Amazing Grace the hymn that described his “wretched” life and the grace of Almighty God. Centuries after he penned the classic hymn it is perhaps the world’s best known and most beloved Christian song.
