Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God

By Jonathan Edwards

Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God is probably the most famous sermon ever preached in America, if not the world.

Colonial America overflowed with unbridled greed, lust, and ambition. Churches did little to change society, often presenting a faraway God who had little concern for the affairs of humankind. In 1741, with this marvelous sermon, Jonathan Edwards changed history and helped spark a spiritual awakening. Instead of the “Deist” God who seldom interfered in man’s activities, Edwards presented the God of the Bible, “The God who dreadfully abhors you . . . Who dangles you over the precipice much as one would dangle a spider over a flame.” The results were remarkable. People cried aloud and grasped the backs of the pews lest the ground open up and swallow them alive into hell. Others fainted, wept uncontrollably or quivered like a leaf in the wind. Historians recognize Edwards as one of the most brilliant men of all times.
